Violence in Mexico has left Canadian travelers wondering what's next. Violence erupted near the popular resort city of Puerto Vallarta after a Mexican army raid killed a cartel leader. It prompted Rd. blocks, car fires, shootouts, and airport closures. Canadian travelers described having to take cover and being told by officials to shelter in place. Airlines have cancelled or diverted dozens of flights. Canadian airports, meanwhile, are warning travelers boarding US-bound flights. to allow for extra time to get through customs. Nexus and Global Entry pre-clearance programs for travelers flying to the U.S. are suspended, so more time will be needed to pass through security checks. The suspension follows a partial government shutdown over a stalemate on legislative funding for the Department of Homeland Security. And the Silver Alert system, which helps locate missing seniors with cognitive disorders, has been expanded across the province. Friday, the health minister and public security minister made the announcement after a pilot project started in six regions in Quebec in 2022. The system alerts the public via social media, radio, TV, and police websites when a senior over 65 with a major neurocognitive disorder goes missing and is in imminent danger. Currently, about 7% of the population of people over 65 suffer from a major neurocognitive disorder. Lite 1067 Sports, a collective sigh could be heard across the country as Canada's men's hockey team lost the gold medal game at the Olympics yesterday, 2-1 in overtime to the U.S. to win silver. Canada's men's curling team took home the gold while the women won bronze. The Milano-Cortina Olympics wrapped up yesterday with a colorful closing ceremony in Verona, Italy. Canada finished 8th in the medal standings, bringing home 21 medals, including five gold. It was the first time since 94 that Canada's placed outside the top five at the Winter Olympics. Norway led the country with 41 medals, followed by the U.S. and Italy to round out the top three. In the NBA yesterday, the Raptors beat Milwaukee won 22.94. Oklahoma City tomorrow, 730. And baseball spring training got underway this weekend. The Jays won their first preseason game against the Phillies, but lost yesterday to the Red Sox 11-10. They face the Mets this afternoon at 1.
