The dollar trading 73.11 cents U.S. I'm Stacey Engelhart. A new report shows Canadian children are living in poverty with about 1.4 million affected as household costs continue to rise. Campaign 2000 said roughly 30,000 children fell below the poverty line in 2023, marking the third annual increase. The report found single-parent families face the greatest hardship. Nearly half are living in poverty. Advocates say the finding highlights the need for stronger government support to help families afford basic necessities. Montreal police say assaults reported in the metro system rose sharply over the past year. Officers recorded 726 incidents in 2025, up about 15% from the year before. Much of the increase was linked to a surge early in the year. Police say assaults included physical confrontations. Authorities stressed the metro remains safe with incidents still uncommon compared to overall ridership. As Prime Minister Carney prepares to leave for a 10-day trade mission to India, Australia and Japan, the opposition leader will wade into some international trade issues himself. Pierre Poilievre sent to give a speech laying out his conservative party's vision for the Canada-U.S. relationship. Yesterday, the Prime Minister signed a new defense agreement with South Korea. It creates rules for sharing and safeguarding classified military information. Canada is sending $8 million in food aid to Cuba. The funding will be delivered through international organizations.
