The Bank of Canada dangles another carrot of affordability today. The rate this morning is expected to remain unchanged, most likely because GDP numbers were stronger than expected. Here's a fun side note. Government spending can artificially inflate GDP numbers while simultaneously making life less affordable for consumers. StatsCan said just the price of beef alone in the past year has surged 12.4%. Overall food inflation up 6% in the past year. What's more disturbing, one in four Canadians does not have consistent, dependable access to enough food. Electors in Quebec will no longer see any English on their election guides and voter information cards because of the Quebec language law, Bill 96. In an interview yesterday, Elections Quebec said it requested an exemption, but was denied. According to a constitutional lawyer, refusing to provide adequate electoral information to its English-speaking minority, the Quebec government may be violated. the constitution. A major Quebec labour group launched a legal challenge of a new provincial law that affects union governance and transparency. The Confederation des Cendicat Nations, one of the largest union federations in the province, is challenging the law at the Quebec Superior Court. It introduces a new category of optional union dues on top of regular fees. which would be used for activities or legal challenges under the new law. It also forces labor organizations to publish information on their finances and secret ballot procedures. And a former Quebec priest convicted of sexually abusing 2 boys faces new charges of possessing child sex abuse material. Brian Boucher's lawyer appeared in a Montreal court. The case was postponed to next week. The 64-year-old was sentenced in 2019 to 8 years. but was granted release after five. He worked at 10 Montreal area churches from the 80s to 2015.
